It’s possible that they may have been used in shop settings to weigh produce, including vegetables. This would have been around the time when shops were independent offering personalised customer service. <\/p>\n

There would have been a butcher, baker and a grocer to be found in towns and ingredients were purchased individually to be included in home cooking in the days before convenience food and ready meals!
