Miner\u2019s Helmet
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>Brora Heritage Centre<\/b><\/h1>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]This black, hardened leather miner\u2019s helmet belonged to Thomas Murray Hunter, who operated the Brora Coal Mine from 1915 to 1947.<\/p>\n

Coal was central to the war effort, powering industry, railways, and shipping. During the Second World War, there was a shortage of miners as many men went to fight. Consequently, mining was made into a reserved occupation, with men exempt from military service.<\/p>\n

Miners were required to work in very cramped and awkward conditions and spaces.
