Belemnites lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (the Jurassic Period began about 201 million years ago and the Cretaceous Period ended about 66 million years ago).<\/span><\/p>\n

The fossilised remains of their hard bullet-like tail (known as a rostrum) are commonly found on British beaches and have been the subject of myths in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

Belemnites are very useful to geologists who have been able to learn about the sea temperatures and currents by studying them. The closest relatives alive today include squid and cuttlefish.<\/span><\/p>\n
