This very large fan mussel shell was found in Loch Ewe and is believed to have been around twenty years old. It\u2019s one of the largest examples ever found.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Britain\u2019s biggest bivalve shellfish, the fan mussel (slige-ghaotharain) is now extremely rare due to scallop dredging.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dredging is now known to cause severe damage to marine life and habitats. It\u2019s now banned in Scotland\u2019s marine protected areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
