Advocate’s Wig

This object gives us an insight into changing fashions. Wigs were first worn during the reign of King Charles II when they were essential for members of polite society, including judges and lawyers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst the fashion for wig-wearing has long passed, it remains in the courtroom to this day, where judges can still be seen wearing them. Bob-wigs like this one were introduced in the 1780s, and is made from horse hair. It has frizzed sides (not curls) and a short tail or ‘queue’ at the back.<\/span><\/p>\n
