At first glance, this stone wall looks very ordinary. However, upon closer inspection, you can see that the lower stones contain intricate carvings. These are ledger stones, which are typically laid into the floor of a church to mark the place of burial. Here, they have been recycled to form the walls of a nave.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the engravings shows a stag, the symbol of the Mackenzie family. This appears alongside skull and crossbones, which functions as a \u2018memento mori\u2019 – a symbol to remind us of our own mortality.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
