Shortbread Press

During the Victorian period, most foods were made at home, including butter, bread, and biscuits.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortbread was easily made with just three ingredients \u2013 flour, butter, and sugar, or even just flour and butter!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the dough was combined and flattened into rounds, a wooden press like this was used to stamp a pattern on the shortbread before baking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These wooden presses were handmade and carved by local craftsmen and could be in a wide range of designs. This one showcases a traditional thistle, the flower of Scotland. It came from Tobermory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
