Brass Bell
Ullapool Museum

This brass bell belonged to Reverend Malcolm MacLeod. He would ring the bell at Sunday School, which he held at the Church of Scotland on Lewis.

In the 1800s, it was common for children to go to Sunday School. Not all children were able to attend school during the week, as they were expected to help at home or even work. Sunday Schools provided an opportunity for these children learn reading, writing, maths, and religious education.
