Lace Wedding Dress

Gairloch Museum

This beautiful cotton lace wedding dress belonged to Jessie MacKenzie of North Erradale. It has very tiny stitching, delicate detail at the front, and pleating around the neck. It was handmade and machine-sewn.

Jessie was a primary school teacher in Applecross for ten years, which is where she met her husband Alistair Donald Ross. The pair married in 1943 during World War Two and a time of rations.

Sadly, Alistair was a Merchant Navy officer and was tragically lost at sea only a few months after their wedding. Jessie never married again.  She lived with her brother in North Erradale and taught at Achtercairn School.
