Mackenzie Monument
Tarbat Discovery Centre

This large monument stands in the graveyard at Tarbat Discovery Centre. Modelled as a traditional tomb, the ‘doorway to Heaven’ is flanked by Corinthian pillars and sits below a skull and bones frieze.

This outdoor monument is a commemoration to the Mackenzie family, who lay inside the church below the Mackenzie plaque.

The Mackenzie family was a very prominent family across the Highlands. From the early eighteenth century, family members held important positions like Viscounts, Earls, Lord of Session, Dukes, Justice Generals, and Secretaries of State. The grand monument is a tribute to the high status of individuals from the Mackenzie family.
