Pair of Field Glasses

Seaboard Centre

This object tells us about daily life for a soldier in World War One. Binoculars or ‘field glasses’ were extremely useful for increasing vision but were in short supply.

Many soldiers purchased their own and would have looked after them. This pair belonged to Sergeant Robert Ross and was clearly brought with him to World War One as the leather case has been scratched with ‘1908 Sgt Ross’. He wouldn’t have wanted to lose them.
