A spyglass is a small telescope. This example was used for observation by volunteer battalions of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.
It shows that volunteer battalions were an important part of the army, defending the home front and keeping watch.
Volunteer battalions have always been an important part of Highland life, allowing men with different professions to be involved in defending their country.
This spyglass was presented to Major John Cameron on his retirement from the volunteers in 1901.
