Belemnite Fossils

Belemnites lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (the Jurassic Period began about 201 million years ago and the Cretaceous Period ended about 66 million years ago).

The fossilised remains of their hard bullet-like tail (known as a rostrum) are commonly found on British beaches and have been the subject of myths in the past.

Belemnites are very useful to geologists who have been able to learn about the sea temperatures and currents by studying them. The closest relatives alive today include squid and cuttlefish.
