Fan Mussel Shell

Taigh-tasgaidh Gheàrrloch

This very large fan mussel shell was found in Loch Ewe and is believed to have been around twenty years old. It’s one of the largest examples ever found.

Britain’s biggest bivalve shellfish, the fan mussel (slige-ghaotharain) is now extremely rare due to scallop dredging.

Dredging is now known to cause severe damage to marine life and habitats. It’s now banned in Scotland’s marine protected areas.
