Mackay Tartan Kilt
Taigh-tasgaidh Shrath Nabhair

This Mackay tartan kilt was made from a length of vegetable-dyed material for Ian Mackay. Sadly, during the First World War, Ian was killed whilst seeing action with the Sixth Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in 1918.

Following his death, the kilt passed to his nephew, Ian Grant Smith. He went on to serve in the Royal Scots Territorial Army throughout the Second World War, wearing it regularly. Ian eventually left the kilt to Strathnaver Museum on his death in 1994, in honour of his uncle.
