Cigarette Lighter Pierced by a Bullet
The Highlanders’ Museum
This cigarette lighter belonged to a Private Tommy Fraser from the First Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was stationed in France during World War Two.
The lighter is reported to have saved his life when he was struck by a bullet. Fraser suffered only a broken rib as a result of the impact.
There are many examples of objects that are claimed to have saved the lives of a soldier during war. Smoking was a common habit at this time and many men would have carried smoking paraphernalia.
