German Schu Mine
The Highlanders’ Museum

This wooden box is actually a ‘Schu mine’, used by the German Army in World War Two. It tells us about daily life for a soldier, and the kind of risks they would have faced.

These small mines were particularly dangerous as their wooden casing made them impossible to detect using magnetic mine detectors. They were used in the Italian campaign of 1944, and this example was captured by the 6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.
