Flying Round the British Empire Board Game
Highland Museum of Childhood
‘Flying Round the British Empire’ is a good example of colonial propaganda.
The expansion of the British empire was not welcomed by all members of society and was marked by violence. Board games like this were part of a propaganda campaign to ensure the British public associated empire with patriotism and nostalgia.
When playing this boardgame, children could explore Britain’s global colonies, starting in London and travelling across the board through the West Indies (now the Caribbean), Africa, India, Asia, and Oceania.
