These large ledgers provide an insight into maritime trade in Portmahomack during the 1800s. They give details of where ships arriving into Portmahomack harbour had sailed from, how long they stayed, and their cargo. At this time, ships mainly carried potatoes, wheat, herring, and coal.

Portmahomack Harbour is a sheltered natural port within a safe bay. This was crucial for allowing the trade and supply of goods to the remote Portmahomack peninsula.
