Leslye Crest
Tarbat Discovery Centre
This seventeenth-century carved stone commemorates Jeanne Leslye, who died in 1623. It features the family crest of Clan Leslie and shows the Latin motto, ‘Grip Fast’, meaning ‘hold tight’.
Two of the four quadrants contain shoe buckles – these symbolised eternity, loyalty, strength, and protection, and were therefore very appropriate symbols for memorials and graves.
