Spinning and carding were often undertaken outside as they were messy jobs and benefitted from good light.
This enclosed basket was useful for stuffing with wool, preventing the wool from blowing away in the stiff breezes that are so common on the West Coast of Scotland.
A small opening allows the spinner to pluck out the wool as needed.
