The Rosemarkie Stone

This Pictish stone gives us important information about people from the period 1000 to 1500 year ago. Many such large stones have been found across the north half of Scotland. The name Picts, meaning painted people, was given to them by the Romans.

This magnificent cross-slab was found in two pieces in the floor of the old church in Rosemarkie around 1819.

Like so much archaeology, it is incomplete; in this case, the base and some of the top are lost.
