There have been settlements along the north coast of Scotland for many centuries, motivated in large part due to the opportunities to fish here.  

This fish box stencil was for R Spears & Co West Coast Kippers, a company based in Thurso, and has its own unique design.  

During Victorian times, fish were boxed in ice and branded at the harbour so that the contents could be identified once they reached market.
