Puzzle Jug

Glencoe Folk Museum

This brown stoneware drinking vessel is actually a puzzle jug. On the front is written the challenge: ‘Gentlemen drink and let your skill be tested and forfeit made if anything be wasted.’

The neck of the jug is pierced with a floral decoration and the rim has five closed spouts.

Jugs like this were skilfully created as infuriating or humorous drinking challenges. They would have caused uproar and amusement in public houses and inns as drinkers attempted to solve the puzzle and drink without spilling.
