Cream Skimmer

Gairloch Museum

This wonderful kitchen device for skimming the cream from milk has been fashioned from a scallop shell drilled with holes. It shows an inventive use of natural materials and would have been used for making butter and crowdie cheese.

Crowdie is a soft cheese traditionally made by crofting families using milk from the family cow.

How do you think those perfect holes in the shell were made without breaking it?
